FrostWire 7.1.2-build-334 Release Notes:

FrostWire 7.1.2 build 334

October 25, 2026 FrostWire 7.1.2 is a security and responsiveness update to 7.1.1. On Windows, macOS and Linux it ships the Java runtime that fixes this week's severe Oracle Java security advisory. On Windows it also makes text sharp again on high-resolution displays and stops a class of UI freezes caused by the graphics driver. On every platform it removes dozens of places where the window could freeze for seconds while FrostWire waited on the disk, the network, the clipboard or the BitTorrent engine.

Security

  • The bundled Java runtime is updated to OpenJDK 27.0.1.0.3 on Windows, macOS and Linux. It replaces OpenJDK 27 (build 27+35) and fixes the vulnerabilities in this week's severe Oracle Java security advisory. FrostWire runs on the runtime inside its own installer, not on a Java you may have installed separately, so updating FrostWire is how you get the fix. The startup log now shows the full runtime build (27.0.1.0.3+1-2), so you can check which one you are running.

What's fixed on Windows

  • Text is sharp again at display scaling above 100%. FrostWire.exe starts Java inside its own process, so Windows applies the launcher's manifest, and ours did not say the app handles display scaling. Windows treated FrostWire as an old, DPI-unaware program and stretched the whole window as a bitmap, which made all text blurry at 125%, 150% and 200%. The launcher now declares per-monitor DPI awareness, the same settings Java's own java.exe uses (#1243, #1300).
  • No more multi-second freezes waiting on the graphics driver. The launcher used to force Java's OpenGL renderer, added years ago in an attempt to fix the blurry text, which it never did. With OpenGL, Java holds a global drawing lock while the driver works, so on many machines (including fast ones) a progress bar, a scroll or a table cell could freeze the whole window for over 5 seconds. FrostWire now uses Java's default Direct3D renderer on Windows. Text rendered the same in our tests, and this should also help Windows on ARM laptops, which have no native OpenGL driver (#1306).
  • FrostWire.exe is now signed by FrostWire LLC, like the installer, so Windows and antivirus tools can verify the program you actually run.

A more responsive FrostWire

Build 333 started sending us the stack of every UI freeze longer than a few seconds. Those reports pointed at work that was being done on the UI thread, and 7.1.2 moves it to the background:
  • Transfers: adding, removing, selecting, hovering, right-clicking, dragging, playing and restoring transfers no longer wait on the BitTorrent engine or the disk. The Seeding column, tooltips and file icons are prepared in the background, and status refreshes share a small thread pool instead of starting a thread per transfer every second.
  • Transfers and search results no longer get slower the longer FrostWire runs. Table cells were adding a new mouse listener every time they were drawn, a leak that eventually froze the UI.
  • Search: pressing Enter, typing (suggestions no longer render as HTML) and switching or closing search tabs no longer stall on slow machines.
  • Library: scrolling no longer checks the disk for every row on every repaint, which froze on slow and network drives, and Options > Library folders no longer lists every subfolder just to draw its expand arrows.
  • Windows: file icons in Transfers and in a torrent's file selection are fetched from Windows in the background, and switching back to FrostWire no longer waits for another app that is holding the clipboard.
  • macOS: scrolling the Transfers and search tables no longer asks macOS for the mouse position for every cell drawn.
  • Startup and idle: Java's text shaper, fallback fonts, drag-and-drop cursors and logging are warmed up in the background at launch, images are decoded in memory instead of through temporary files, and the status bar no longer rebuilds itself every few seconds or on every resize event.

Also new and fixed

  • Search results you already started downloading are marked with a download arrow, in later searches too. FrostWire keeps no list of your downloads for this, only a fixed-size Bloom filter of hashes that can recognize a result but cannot be read back (#950).
  • Transfer Detail > Pieces shows what each piece is. Hover a cube to highlight it in orange and see a card with the piece's number, state (downloaded, downloading with block progress, missing or skipped), size, byte range, how many peers have it, priority, SHA-1 hash and the files it belongs to. The cubes are also drawn crisp at display scaling above 100%, re-wrap to the panel's width when you resize the window, and no longer leave stray line fragments or cut off the second to last row.
  • The Peers tab in Transfer Detail updates again: speeds, totals and sorting refresh every second, disconnected peers disappear, and the Uploaded column shows a size (#1307).
  • Fixed crashes when sorting changed during a background re-sort, when the Torrent Data library cache was cleared mid-scan, and when the shared background pool was busy (it now queues work instead of rejecting it).
  • macOS: clicking FrostWire's Dock icon brings back its hidden window again; the listener for it failed to register at startup.
  • FrostWire exits with a message instead of reporting a crash when started without a graphical session.
  • Distributed Search writes its list of known IceBridge servers at most every 5 minutes, and atomically, so a crash can no longer leave it truncated.
  • Freeze reports are sent once, with their stack, and are tagged (render-queue:, jdk-shellfolder:, stack-missed:, shutdown:) so that freezes inside Java or the graphics driver group apart from freezes in FrostWire's own code.
This release advances the desktop version to 7.1.2 and build from 333 to 334. It retains the distributed search, peer catalog browsing, and other features introduced in FrostWire 7.1.0 build 332.

Full changelog

  • update:The Java runtime bundled with the Windows, macOS and Linux installers is updated from OpenJDK 27 to 27.0.1.0.3, which fixes the vulnerabilities in this week's severe Oracle Java security advisory
  • fix:Windows: text is no longer blurry at display scaling above 100% — FrostWire.exe now declares per-monitor DPI awareness, so Windows no longer stretches the whole window as a bitmap (#1243, #1300)
  • fix:Windows: the UI no longer freezes waiting on the graphics driver — FrostWire.exe stopped forcing Java's OpenGL renderer and uses the default Direct3D one; OpenGL had been turned on to fix the blurry text, which it never did, and its render queue held up painting for over 5 seconds on many machines (#1306)
  • fix:Windows: FrostWire.exe is now signed by FrostWire LLC, like the installer
  • fix:macOS: clicking FrostWire's Dock icon brings back its hidden window again — the listener for it failed to register at startup with an "Error setting application handler" error
  • fix:The startup log shows the full Java runtime build (e.g. 27.0.1.0.3+1-2) instead of only the release number, so the bundled runtime can be told apart
  • fix:Selecting a seeding transfer no longer freezes the UI while the BitTorrent engine is busy — whether "Endorse Source Peer" applies is decided in the background, and so are the checks when you click it
  • fix:Opening the file selection for a torrent no longer freezes the UI on Windows — file-type icons are fetched from Windows in the background and appear as they load
  • fix:Opening screens with many icons (such as lists with delete buttons), showing song artwork, slides and skin images no longer stalls on slow disks — images are decoded in memory instead of through a temporary file
  • fix:Switching back to FrostWire no longer freezes the UI on Windows while another application holds the clipboard — the check for a copied icebridge:// link reads the clipboard in the background
  • fix:Hovering over a transfer no longer freezes the UI while the BitTorrent engine is busy — the tooltip shows the values the Transfers table already refreshed instead of querying the engine
  • fix:Adding a transfer no longer freezes the UI — the new row (its .torrent payment and license details, preview check and BitTorrent engine status) is built in the background and only inserted on screen
  • fix:Starting to drag a transfer out of FrostWire no longer freezes the UI on large or slow folders — its files are listed when you drop them, not when the drag starts
  • fix:Scrolling the Library no longer freezes on slow or network drives — whether a file can be played is decided once per file, in the background, instead of checking the disk for every row on every repaint
  • fix:Scrolling or repainting the Library and other tables with Play/Download buttons no longer stalls on Windows — rows without an action show no icon instead of hiding the button, which forced a native cursor update for every painted row
  • new:Search results you already started downloading are marked with a download arrow in the Name column, in later searches too — FrostWire keeps no list of your downloads, only a fixed-size Bloom filter of hashes that can recognize a result but cannot be read back (#950)
  • fix:The Peers tab in Transfer Detail updates again — peer speeds, totals and sorting refresh every second, disconnected peers disappear, and the Uploaded column shows a size instead of a raw byte count (#1307)
  • fix:Opening or refreshing the Torrent Data library view no longer crashes when its cache is cleared while a background scan or search reads it
  • fix:Launching FrostWire without a graphical session (e.g. as a Windows service or in a headless JVM) exits with a message instead of reporting a crash
  • fix:The window-close event that starts shutdown gets 10 seconds instead of 5 before it is reported as a UI freeze, and such reports are tagged "shutdown:" so they group apart from freezes during normal use
  • fix:Closing or switching search tabs no longer freezes the UI on large result sets — the newly shown tab's results are re-filtered once instead of three times
  • fix:Right-clicking a transfer no longer freezes the UI while the BitTorrent engine is busy — torrent and global speed limits for the Advanced menu are read in the background when the transfer is selected
  • fix:UI freeze reports caused by Windows' folder chooser waiting on a slow folder (network drives, cloud placeholders) are tagged "jdk-shellfolder:" so they group apart from freezes in FrostWire's own code
  • fix:UI freeze reports whose stack was captured only after the freeze had ended are tagged "stack-missed:" instead of being filed with a misleading idle stack, and the stack is now sampled from the UI thread alone so it is captured sooner
  • fix:UI freezes are reported once, with their stack, instead of also sending a stack-less duplicate watchdog report
  • fix:Transfers, search results and other sortable tables no longer crash when sorting is turned off or changed while a background re-sort is running
  • fix:Opening or playing files, library searches, SoundCloud downloads and previews, Options panes and peer endorsements no longer crash when background work is busy — the shared background pool queues extra tasks instead of rejecting them, and library icons no longer tie up its threads
  • fix:The Transfers list no longer freezes on Windows while fetching file icons from the system shell — uncached icons are loaded in the background and appear on the next refresh
  • fix:The first time text needs complex shaping no longer freezes the UI on slow machines — Java's text shaper is initialized in the background at startup
  • fix:Pressing Enter in the search box no longer freezes the UI on slow machines — stopping the previous search and starting every search engine now happen in the background, in order
  • fix:Scrolling or refreshing the Transfers and search result tables no longer freezes the UI on macOS — table cells no longer ask macOS for the mouse cursor position every time they are drawn
  • fix:Typing in the search box no longer freezes the UI on slow machines — search suggestions highlight the matched text directly instead of rendering every suggestion as HTML
  • fix:The first time a name in another script (e.g. Chinese or Japanese) appears no longer freezes the UI on slow machines — fallback fonts are loaded in the background at startup
  • fix:The status bar no longer rebuilds itself every 5 seconds or re-lays out the window for every bandwidth update, and checks the firewall state in the background — fewer chances for the UI to stall while idle
  • fix:The first click on a transfers or search results table no longer freezes the UI on slow machines — Java's drag-and-drop cursors are prepared in the background at startup
  • fix:The first paint of the main window no longer pauses to start Java's logging system — it is started in the background at launch
  • fix:UI freeze reports where painting waits on Java's graphics pipeline lock (held while the GPU driver flushes) are tagged "render-queue:" so they group apart from freezes in FrostWire's own code
  • fix:The UI freeze detector no longer leaves a pending timer behind for every UI event, which added overhead during bursts of events
  • fix:Clicking Play on a transfer no longer freezes the UI while FrostWire checks the file on disk and the torrent's progress — the check runs in the background before the player opens
  • fix:Transfers and search results no longer get slower the longer FrostWire runs — table cells were adding a new mouse listener every time they were drawn, a leak that eventually froze the UI
  • fix:Resizing the FrostWire window no longer stutters — the status bar is rebuilt once when the resize settles instead of on every resize event, and not at all for height-only changes
  • fix:Opening Options > Library folders no longer freezes on large or network folders — the folder tree no longer lists every subfolder just to draw its expand arrows
  • fix:Removing a transfer no longer freezes the UI while its files are checked and cleaned up — the row disappears immediately and the removal finishes in the background
  • fix:The Transfers list no longer stalls while drawing the Seeding column — each row's seeding state is computed in the background instead of asking the BitTorrent engine while painting
  • fix:Transfers no longer start a new thread every second each to refresh their status — refreshes share a small background pool, which keeps the UI responsive with many torrents
  • fix:Starting to drag many files no longer freezes the UI — the drag preview shows the first few files with cached icons and a count of the rest
  • fix:Starting or restoring downloads no longer freezes the UI while each torrent's details are read — transfers are prepared in the background and then added to the list
  • fix:Distributed Search writes its list of known IceBridge servers to disk at most every 5 minutes instead of once per server it contacts, and replaces the file atomically so a crash can no longer leave it truncated
  • new:Transfer Detail > Pieces: hovering a piece highlights its cube in orange and shows a card with its number, state (downloaded, downloading with block progress, missing or skipped), size, byte range, how many peers have it, priority, SHA-1 hash and the files it belongs to
  • fix:Transfer Detail > Pieces no longer cuts off the bottom of the second to last row of cubes when the last row is shorter
  • fix:Transfer Detail > Pieces draws its cubes crisp at display scaling above 100% (e.g. 125% or 150% on Windows) instead of stretching a low resolution picture of them
  • fix:Transfer Detail > Pieces no longer leaves stray line fragments below the cubes after resizing the window or switching transfers
  • fix:Transfer Detail > Pieces re-wraps its cubes to the panel's width when the window is resized, filling the space vertically instead of needing a horizontal scrollbar
